Meet the Oregon Directors

Charley and Karyn Schimmels

karyn-charlieCharley and Karyn have dedicated their hearts and countless hours to making this program happen each and every year. Charley and Karyn were both raised in Yakima, Washington and have been married and lived in Oregon since 1988. They are a dynamic team that co-direct camp each year and provide incredible leadership for their volunteer counselors. Charley and Karyn have four children and love being Oregonians and serving youth in a variety of ways in their community of Tigard and through Camp To Belong.

Karyn has been an active and committed volunteer for Camp To Belong Oregon (CTB Oregon) and for Camp To Belong International since 2001. Karyn’s hard work and dedication to this program brought Camp To Belong to the Pacific Northwest and she was a key individual responsible for helping the state of Washington form their own member camp in 2009, after years of serving Washington youth through CTB NW. Karyn also served as Chair of CTB International BOD from 2007-2012 and on the Board of Directors through 2013.

Her work on behalf of Oregon’s foster care youth has changed the way siblings are supported by foster and adoptive parents in Oregon through the development of sibling placement practice protocols for Oregon DHS child welfare staff and the positive impact these camp experiences have had on Oregon foster care youth. In 2010 Karyn was recognized for her tireless efforts for CTB Oregon and was honored and received an award as the Region 2 Volunteer of the Year for Oregon Volunteers! Karyn works full time in a statewide position as the Child Welfare Training manager for the Department of Human Services and has worked in public child welfare for over 20 years.

Charley has also dedicated many years to Camp To Belong Oregon. In the early years, his role was more of a supporter of Karyn’s efforts and being a full time dad when she was serving as a volunteer. Charley has been on board in a much bigger way since camp came to Oregon in 2006. He jumped in with both feet and has never looked back! Charley is the “mouth piece”, “master of ceremonies”, and most affectionately known as “BIG DADDY” at camp. The kids and counselors adore him and love to sing his crazy camp songs and look for his leadership each year at camp. Charley serves as “Big Daddy” in Oregon and in Washington each year. Two full weeks of vacation time each year for siblings! In real life, Charley is a Sales guy who works full time selling truck equipment to support his family and his company that employs him. He also loves being a dad and husband. With his huge personality, he is a hard guy to forget and he has truly become a dedicated partner and co-director of CTB Oregon. In his other little spare time, Charley also dedicates hundreds of hours to coaching youth football and baseball in his Tigard hometown.
